Marc Colin, established in 1970 by its eponymous founder, Marc Colin, boasts a domaine spanning 12 hectares across 26 appellations in Saint Aubin, Santenay, Chassagne, and Puligny, including coveted parcels such as Montrachet. With a legacy inherited from generations of Colins and Ponavoys, some parcels have remained within the family for over a century.
Today, Marc's children, Damien and Caroline, oversee operations following the departure of their brothers, Pierre-Yves and Joseph, who pursued their own projects in 2005 and 2017, respectively. Embracing a shift towards more sustainable viticulture, the domaine has refined its winemaking techniques, prioritizing precision and terroir expression. With a reduced reliance on new oak, Damien and Caroline opt for larger barrels and foudres to enhance freshness and tension in their wines while minimizing sulfur usage by capturing more CO2 during vinification.
Their Santenay 2021 Champs Claude is a standout red crafted from 110-year-old 'vieilles vignes' in the lieu-dit of Champs Claude, nestled below the esteemed Chassagne 1er cru of Morgeot. The terroir, characterized by gravelly clay enriched with sand, provides an ideal environment for Pinot Noir. Delicately handled oak aging, with only 10% in new barrels up to 6 years old, ensures the cool raspberry fruit is gracefully extracted, resulting in a wine that exhibits both depth and structure, framed by the venerable vines that have nurtured it.
